Join our welcoming community of adults ranging in age from their 50’s to 90’s! Longevity and living well is the goal
You have worked hard all your life. You have paid your bills, put your kids through school, saved for retirement… now it’s time to focus on your health. Not only do you want to live a long life, but you also want to live it with energy and independence. That’s where the YMCA comes in. We have a variety of programs designed with your needs and interests in mind all while being part of a great, supportive community. YMCA Saskatoon is an incredibly supportive community where your relationship with us if more than just a membership fee.
Never been in a gym before?
We understand how challenging that “first time” experience can be. You are not alone. So many of our older members picked the YMCA because our community understands joining a fitness centre can be intimidating. All of our programming is designed to meet you at whatever level you are at. At YMCA Saskatoon, ensuring a strong sense of community, open to all abilities and backgrounds, is an important mandate for our staff and members. We have great facilities and equipment but it’s the people here that truly make the place special. Make the YMCA your first gym…and your last!
YMCA Saskatoon programs designed for our older adult members
Designed for those new to the fitness experience, our ambassadors, selected from our membership, will help you become comfortable at YMCA Saskatoon. This includes joining you for those first couple of workouts or group fitness classes. Getting off to a good start is an important part of ensuring your new health and wellness habit becomes a regular part of your life. When you sign up for your membership, if you would like, we can assign you to one of our ambassadors.
Just want to know how to use the weight room and cardio room equipment? Book a session with one of our personal trainers for a weight room orientation. Free for all members.
Our Aquafit classes are the cornerstone of our older adult programming. All of our classes can be scaled to your level and you do not have to be a great swimmer to participate. Aquafit provides an excellent way to use the balancing and support properties of water while helping your heart and lungs to be stronger while providing resistance training benefits. It’s a very safe way to exercise…you do not have to be a swimmer to participate.
NEW in the fall of 2025, this class is specifically designed for those 50 years of age and older who want a course curriculum designed with your needs and interests in mind. These classes will offer scalable workouts combining both cardiorespiratory challenges with resistance training. Learning how to get the most out of your workout experience is an underlining concept that will guide the programming.
Get the best of both worlds by attending our new Active Aging class (Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 AM) with the ever popular 9:00 AM Aquafit class. The Active Aging Class is designed to specifically complement the activities in the 9:00 AM Aquafit class.
This YMCA national program is free for all members and provides you with set workout progressions designed for all levels. Using our weight room equipment, this program has levels for all abilities and is a great start for those new to working out. YThrive is great for you if your preference is to work out on your own. Initial and follow-up sessions are booked with one of our YThrive coaches as we help find the right program for you, ensure you know how to do the exercise and includes periodic check ins with you to see how you are doing.
