Saskatoon Kendo Club - Training for All Levels

Kendo accepts new Beginners in September and January ONLY, starting on the term start dates. People with previous Kendo experience can join at any time.
Kendo is Japanese-style fencing using bamboo swords and light armour. Kendo matches are high speed and full-contact, demanding athletic skill and mental sharpness to succeed. This style of sword training originated over 300 years ago and has evolved into a modern martial art with a strong competition element. Kendo is safer than any other full contact martial art due to the gear and rules. The Saskatoon Kendo Club is a member of the Canadian Kendo Federation, which is in turn a member of the International Kendo Federation. Ranks earned through CKF are recognized world-wide. This group follows international Kendo rules and helps people of all levels learn and enjoy this exciting sport.
Kendo practice is at the Downtown YMCA
The Saskatoon Kendo Club accepts students age 12 and up. There is no maximum age: people have started in their 50s with success. Kendo does not have any special kids’ classes so parents should understand that kids will be training with adults. SKC takes care to ensure kids’ safety in the mixed training environment.
Parents are always welcome to observe the class at any time. We welcome any questions or concerns parents may have. This gives families the chance to stay involved and see the progress their children are making.
The Saskatoon Kendo Club offers free introductory classes at the start of the September and January sessions. Anyone can come and try Kendo without needing a YMCA membership or day pass. Just bring a photo ID, as required by the YMCA rules. Wear some clothes you can move in, we will provide the rest.
There are no extra club fees for participating in Kendo beyond your YMCA membership or drop-in rate, making it more accessible for everyone. However, there are some equipment costs. After the introductory class, beginners are expected to purchase a shinai (bamboo sword). Later on students will need a uniform and eventually armour. Saskatoon Kendo Club rents armour to students for a minimal fee.
